The government has cancelled the gazettes of 128 individuals recognized as ‘July Fighters’ (those injured in the mass uprising), citing false information and multiple listings in the official gazette.
The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs announced the gazette cancellation through a circular issued this Wednesday. The Ministry stated that legal action will be taken against those who fraudulently enlisted as July Fighters and misappropriated government funds.
Rationale for the Decision
The decision follows recommendations from district committees. These committees found that some individuals listed in the gazette of those injured in the mass uprising were not injured, were not actively involved in the movement when they sustained injuries, or had multiple gazettes published under their names.
Background
The government recognizes those killed in the July mass uprising as ‘July Martyrs’ and those injured as ‘July Fighters.’ Both the families of the martyrs and the fighters receive a one-time grant as well as a monthly allowance. The government has published gazettes for 844 July Martyrs in two phases. Prior to this, the gazettes of eight individuals had already been cancelled.
